The following are several suggestions to help you find the halfway house that is best for you:
- Ask around at 12 Step meetings.
If there is a halfway house with a good reputation, people in the rooms will know about it. Likewise, if there is a halfway house known for sketchy practices or people always seem to be relapsing there, it’s good to know that too. It’s important that you ask around and not just ask one person. He/she may have negative comments about a place, but it might be that that they were kicked out for breaking the rules. Ask at least 5 people. Also, you probably have seen vans pulling up outside meetings that come from treatment centers, but sometimes they are also from halfway houses. A halfway house that offers transportation to meetings is a huge plus. It shows that they care if their clients are actually working a program.
- Take a Tour
A lot of houses are more than willing to set up a tour. Not a lot of halfway houses have websites and even less have decent pictures that can really give you an idea of what the place looks like. The actual house can look better—or worse—than it does in pictures. Also, this will give you an idea of what the community at the house is like—is comfortable and homey? Does it look well maintained? Are a bunch of people just lying around sleeping in the middle of the day on a Tuesday?
- Rules Rule
Understandably your first thought may not be “I want to find a super strict house with a lot of rules.” But finding a house that has—and actually enforces—rules is important. Especially during early recovery, you want to be in a positive environment with recovery focused individuals. You don’t want stay somewhere with no structure and no one caring what is going on.
